Yakima is continuously stepping up their build quality game over the years and improving their technology to cater for more selective customers, while maintaining a good price. Their hard work shows in their products and the HighSpeed is no exception. It looks great, is rock solid, and has a wide range of features.
The HighSpeed has a sleek and aerodynamic tray which won't interfere with hatch opening, even in higher lift hatches. This clearance is an issue that is often overlooked in bike carriers, so it's nice to see Yakima has made sure it isn't a problem with the HighSpeed.
No matter what type of bike you have, the HighSpeed can most likely accommodate it. Road bikes, mountain bikes or even fat bikes with tires up to 5 inches wide are all no problem. Plus it can be used with both quick release (9mm) and thru axle type bikes (20mm, 15mm, or 12mm), the only type of bike that requires an adapter kit are 9mm x 135mm quick release fat bikes.
It's also versatile in the range of racks it can be fitted to, as standard it will fit most bars on the market with its wrap around the bar attachment system. It also has the ability to fit T-slot crossbars with the addition of a Smart T-Slot kit.
For security it includes a TailWhip cable lock, but note that lock cores are not included with this carrier, so you'll need to purchase a pack separately such as the Yakima SKS lock core 2 pack. For ultimate security you can also add a lockcore to the TorqueRight securing knob. You can key alike all of your Yakima products by purchasing lock cores separately. The new design TorqueRight knob does an excellent job of getting the tension just perfect to ensure your bike isn't going anywhere. This new design is now nice to look at, built more solidly and is more aerodynamic than previous iterations.
The only real drawback of this carrier is that you have to remove the front wheel to load your bike, making it less easy than a wheel mount bike carrier to use. However, if you're looking for a fork mount carrier it's a very good option.
Yakima is fast becoming one of the best built and best value brands out there. Competitors should be worried, and will need to step up their game as long as Yakima keeps delivering new products and updates like the HighSpeed.
